It became very popular in the southern U.S. and Canada in the early 1900s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation: <\/strong>30 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cooking: <\/strong>35-45 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Refrigeration: <\/strong>60 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Total: <\/strong>2 hours 15 minutes, including refrigeration time<\/p>\n<p><strong>Portions:<\/strong> 6<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>INGREDIENTS (serves 6)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a01 \u00bd lb. lean ground beef<\/li>\n<li>\u00a02\u00a0eggs, lightly beaten<\/li>\n<li>\u00a01 cup breadcrumbs<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00bd cup light cream (10%)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a01\u00a0onion, finely chopped<\/li>\n<li>\u00a04 Tbsp. oil<\/li>\n<li>\u00a02 Tbsp. parsley flakes<\/li>\n<li>\u00a04\u00a0medium onions, sliced in rings<\/li>\n<li>\u00a01 package fresh mushrooms, sliced<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Salt and pepper, to taste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the gravy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0\u00bc cup pan juices (after cooking the patties)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A little butter<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0\u00bc cup all-purpose flour<\/li>\n<li>\u00a04 Tbsp. liquid beef bouillon concentrate (Bovril)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a02\u00a0cups boiling water<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Salt and pepper, to taste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>DIRECTIONS<\/h2>\n<p><strong>STEP\u00a01<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Combine the meat, breadcrumbs, beaten eggs, light cream, onion and parsley. Form into 6 patties. Refrigerate for about 1 hour: this will prevent them from falling apart. Brown on both sides over a low flame in 4 Tbsp. of oil of your choice. Set aside.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP\u00a02<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gravy: heat the pan juices over low heat, mix in the butter and flour, whisking constantly. Gradually add the boiling water combined with the beef bouillon concentrate. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer 15 minutes. Let thicken and season to taste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEP\u00a03<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Add the gravy, onion rings and mushrooms to the meat; simmer over low heat for 35 minutes.
