No matter how we live, every little effort helps us be more eco-conscious and reduce our impact on the environment. For Earth Day, here\u2019s a quick reminder of a few more sustainable actions<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u2013\u00a0ones <\/strong><strong>we probably already do, but that are worth <\/strong><strong>turning into <\/strong><strong>everyday habits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1. Moving around with the planet in mind<\/h2>\n<p>Did you know that in Quebec, road, air, marine and rail transportation account for about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/government\/policies-orientations\/plan-green-economy\/initiatives-fight-climate-change\/reducing-ghg-transportation\">43% of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/a>? Road transport alone makes up 31.2%! To reduce these emissions, limit air pollution and improve air quality, we can all do our part at our own level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Choose public transit, carpooling and car sharing<\/strong> to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and GHG per person;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adopt eco-driving practices<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/saaq.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/driving-course\/automobile\/module-12-eco-driving\">recommended by the SAAQ<\/a>. This driving approach helps reduce energy consumption, pollutant emissions, and vehicle wear;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opt for electric vehicles<\/strong> instead of gas or diesel cars. Although the initial purchase price is higher\u2013\u00a0and battery production does have an environmental impact\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the fuel and maintenance savings, along with a reduced environmental footprint, are worth it in the long run;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go for \u201cactive transportation\u201d<\/strong> like walking or biking, which are great alternatives for short trips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What about in a residence?<\/h3>\n<p>At Le Groupe Maurice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legroupemaurice.com\/en\/articles\/sustainable-development-is-everyones-business\/\">ESG\u00a0\u2013\u00a0short for Environmental, Social and Governance\u00a0\u2013\u00a0really matters<\/a>, and many of our residents are already pretty eco-aware. That\u2019s why <strong>we\u2019ve put several initiatives in place to help take care of the planet for the long run<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that many of our residential complexes are ideally located, close to a variety of shops or public transit, which reduces the need for driving. Some even provide a shuttle service to make errands and group outings more convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, we\u2019ve installed electric vehicle charging stations in our garages to promote the use of such cars among both residents and staff. Lastly, a few residences like Elogia and ORA have partnered with the Quebec car-sharing company Communauto, right in their parking lot!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Composting and recycling for a more sustainable life<\/h2>\n<p>Statistics Canada reports that the average Canadian generates 700\u00a0kg of solid waste annually, placing Canada among the world\u2019s top waste producers, following Norway (824\u00a0kg\/person), the United States (812\u00a0kg\/person) and Denmark (781\u00a0kg\/person). However, an increasing number of our citizens are recognizing the importance of composting and recycling for a more sustainable life.<\/p>\n<p>By making these practices part of our everyday routines, we can actively contribute to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. For instance, composting more could <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/ohdio\/premiere\/emissions\/moteur-de-recherche\/segments\/chronique\/402360\/compostage-poubelles-reduction-methane\">lower Quebec\u2019s overall GHG emissions by at least 7.8%<\/a>, which is certainly significant!<\/p>\n<p>But reducing waste starts at the point of purchase. Opting for long-lasting products, steering clear of excess packaging and cutting down on food waste are all easy steps that, together, have a real impact. After that, it\u2019s crucial to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recyc-quebec.gouv.qc.ca\/appmobile-cavaou\/\">sort our trash correctly and know which bin it belongs in<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>And good news! As of January 1, 2025, <strong>a new regulation is making recycling easier in Quebec<\/strong>. All containers, packaging and printed materials (like chip bags, individual yogurt cups, etc.) can now be placed in the same bin, with no need to separate them. It\u2019s progress toward a circular economy\u00a0\u2013\u00a0but let\u2019s not lose sight of what really matters: making mindful choices before we buy.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What about in a residence?<\/h3>\n<p>Since 2024, fourteen Le Groupe Maurice residences have adopted organic waste sorting, with the goal of implementing it in all residences within the next three years. This shift involves kitchen teams, all staff members and residents themselves, who are encouraged to take part in the movement.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the standard recycling bins (for glass, cardboard and plastic) available in all residences, some also offer drop-off points for lightbulbs, batteries and other household hazardous waste (such as aerosol cans, used oils and paints).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3. Supporting and prioritizing the local economy<\/h2>\n<p>Food, goods and clothing often travel thousands of kilometres before reaching our plates or homes, resulting in a particularly high carbon footprint. In today\u2019s climate of overconsumption, it\u2019s becoming increasingly urgent to find more eco-friendly alternatives\u00a0\u2013\u00a0while also giving our wallets a bit of a break. Here are a few easy ones to adopt:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Start growing herbs and veggies at home<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0not only to cut down on your carbon footprint, but also to brighten up your kitchen or balcony;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Back local farmers and artisans<\/strong> by shopping at nearby markets for fresh, seasonal foods, or by choosing local talent for your wardrobe and d\u00e9cor;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get involved in community gardens<\/strong> to grow your own produce, share tips with fellow enthusiasts and reduce your dependence on imported products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What about in a residence?<\/h3>\n<p>Several Le Groupe Maurice residences\u00a0\u2013\u00a0such as Les Verri\u00e8res du Golf, Le Gibraltar and Le 22\u00a0\u2013\u00a0offer <strong>urban gardens<\/strong> where residents can grow their own vegetables, fruits and herbs. It\u2019s a great way to be more self-sufficient while enjoying a fun and social activity!<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, food supplies are sourced as much as possible from local producers, ensuring fresher ingredients and supporting local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Reducing water and energy consumption<\/h2>\n<p>Internet, lighting, heating and air conditioning make up a significant portion of our energy consumption. As for water, overconsumption puts pressure on natural resources, especially with climate change. While Canada holds 20% of the world\u2019s freshwater reserves, some regions\u00a0\u2013\u00a0like Alberta and British Columbia\u00a0\u2013\u00a0are experiencing shortages due to urban growth and industrial expansion.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics Canada reports that in 2021, Canadians used an average of 401\u00a0litres of drinking water per person per day\u00a0\u2013\u00a0that\u2019s around 146,365\u00a0litres a year. When it comes to energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/240319\/dq240319d-eng.htm\">the average household used 85,4\u00a0gigajoules a year<\/a> (about 23,722\u00a0kilowatt-hours). So, what are some easy habits we can adopt to keep this in check and avoid wasting our natural resources?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Install faucet aerators<\/strong> to reduce water flow without sacrificing comfort, and <strong>close the tap while brushing your teeth<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reuse cooking water<\/strong> (from pasta, vegetables) to water plants;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use the \u201ceco\u201d cycles<\/strong> on the dishwasher and washing machine, and <strong>run them outside of peak hours<\/strong> (between 6\u20139 a.m. and 4\u20138 p.m.);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose an energy-efficient toilet<\/strong>. According to Hydro-Quebec, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroquebec.com\/residential\/energy-wise\/watersense.html\">WaterSense\u00ae-certified models use 20% less water than standard toilets<\/a>. To save even more, you can skip flushing after every little trip;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose showers over baths<\/strong>, and try to <strong>limit them to once a day<\/strong>. Five minutes is enough to get clean, while reducing hot water and energy use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unplug devices that are on standby<\/strong>, as they still use power. <strong>Use a power bar with a switch<\/strong> to easily shut off several things at once;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Close your curtains at nigh<\/strong>t in winter to keep the heat in, and in summer to keep it cool inside;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use LED bulbs<\/strong>. They consume up to 90% less energy than old-school incandescent ones, and last much longer too, says Hydro-Quebec;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cut back on digital clutter<\/strong>. Fewer emails and smaller files mean less energy spent on storing and sending data;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower your thermostat during peak hours<\/strong>. Dropping the temp just a bit helps reduce pressure on the grid, shrinks your carbon footprint and can lower your energy bill too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What about in a residence?<\/h3>\n<p>At Le Groupe Maurice, our residences are designed and built to keep energy and water use in check. We use high-quality construction materials that feature improved insulation and help cut down on heat loss.<\/p>\n<p>The buildings are also equipped with <strong>large windows to maximize natural light<\/strong>, and energy-intensive equipment is replaced with more <strong>efficient solutions like heat pumps<\/strong>. In recent years, water consumption has even been monitored and analyzed to optimize its use and reduce energy waste.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>At Le Groupe Maurice, we\u2019re all about supporting a more sustainable way of living.
