At Le Groupe Maurice, <\/strong>diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)<\/strong><\/a> aren\u2019t just part of our vocabulary: they\u2019re at the heart of everything we do!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cInclusion is why we exist. It\u2019s also our business model,\u201d shares <\/strong>Denis Desaulniers, Vice President <\/strong>– <\/strong>Talent and Culture<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cOur employees and residents live in the same ecosystem. The most important value we hold is kindness\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it\u2019s our bedrock.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This vision comes to life through people like Andr\u00e9, Simon and Louis. As part of our DEI Month, take a moment to meet these inspiring individuals and see how their dedication, authenticity and resilience shape the communities around them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9 Carri\u00e8re-Desjardins\u00a0: Driven to doing it right<\/h2>\n

Andr\u00e9 Carri\u00e8re-Desjardins has served as a kitchen assistant at V\u00dc residence<\/a> for the past three years. A young transgender man, he works with dedication and heart. Reserved by nature, he ensures the well-being of residents<\/strong> by performing each of his tasks with meticulous care.<\/p>\n

Behind Andr\u00e9\u2019s smile and diligence lie genuine challenges, as he lives with dysphasia and a mild intellectual disability. These realities undoubtedly shape his personality and influence his communication style. Nevertheless, they do not hinder his progress. For instance, he has learned to ask questions, express his feelings and articulate what causes him pain.<\/p>\n

A while back, Andr\u00e9 faced a difficult phase related to his transition, necessitating a brief absence from his internship to prioritize self-care. When he returned, he was met with the compassion of his team<\/a>, who supported him without prejudice. \u201cI feel well-accepted here. The people are kind,\u201d<\/em> he notes.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>When Andr\u00e9 is in the kitchen, the atmosphere is uplifting. What touches me is his determination to excel. He is remarkably considerate and approaches life with great resilience,<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> notes Paul Leclerc, General Manager of V\u00dc and himself a member of the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n

Evidently proud to include the young transgender man in his team, he adds: \u201cHighlighting individuals like Andr\u00e9 underscores that there is a place for everyone. To us, he is a member of our family!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

With the support of his colleagues and supervisors, Andr\u00e9 has built greater self-worth and assurance. He feels equally comfortable with older people, whom he describes as kind and easy to connect with. \u201cThey don\u2019t complain, and they\u2019re not constantly on their phones, like people my age,\u201d<\/em> he observes.<\/p>\n

Undoubtedly, Andr\u00e9 embodies an inspiring quiet courage. He demonstrates that in an open and supportive environment, every individual can flourish at their own pace and in their own way. Through him, minds and hearts become more receptive to diversity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Simon Maurer: Passion in action<\/h2>\n

In 15 years, Simon Maurer has organized thousands of activities across various Le Groupe Maurice residences as Living Environment Manager at Elogia<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cThis company is etched into my heart\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/em>its values<\/em><\/a> of kindness, collaboration, leadership, integrity and conviction resonate with me deeply.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

From a young age, Simon knew he wanted a career in leisure and recreation. Diagnosed with dyslexia and dysorthography at age 12, he nevertheless faced multiple challenges before achieving his dream.<\/p>\n

\u201cWriting is the toughest part for me. Even today, I still revise my texts. I have them proofread by other people first.<\/em>\u201d Yet his difficulties never slowed him down. In fact, they pushed him to become exceptionally organized. \u201cI make sure everything is done properly. I always have a Plan A, a Plan B\u00a0\u2013\u00a0sometimes even a Plan C!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Fortunately, he has the support of compassionate colleagues.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s never judgmental, only constructive,\u201d<\/em> Simon affirms. With this kind of attentive mentorship, he\u2019s able to continually exceed his own expectations. By the way, people who interact with Simon often say that he\u2019s truly \u201cin his element\u201d in his role as Living Environment Manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As he reflects on his journey, Simon realizes his challenges have strengthened both his adaptability and resilience. His experiences have also taught him active listening and empathy\u00a0\u2013\u00a0invaluable qualities in his field.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy limitations make me more attuned to others<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>,<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> he states. Indeed, they help him better understand residents. <\/strong>\u201c<\/strong>They<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>re like open books, filled with wisdom to share,<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> he continues, convinced that we all grow through human connection.<\/p>\n

Over the past few years, Simon has also contributed\u00a0\u2013\u00a0with pride!\u00a0\u2013\u00a0to the professional growth of many peers. Some of them now hold positions in recreation, and even leadership roles.<\/p>\n

Guided by his professional passion, Simon plans to continue his career path with Le Groupe Maurice. \u201cI still have the fire in me, and I want to keep making a difference here!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Louis C\u00f4t\u00e9: Consistency at work<\/h2>\n

Louis C\u00f4t\u00e9 has been working as a kitchen assistant at the Sev\u00e4 residence<\/a> for six years. Diligent, punctual and always smiling, the young man, who lives with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), approaches his work with seriousness, following his routine precisely. \u201cI like it when things stay the same. That way, I know what to do,\u201d<\/em> he explains.<\/p>\n

Louis encountered numerous challenges in school. Because he was different from his peers, he was bullied. Compounded by an incorrect diagnosis and learning struggles, he relied on his family\u2019s unwavering kindness and support. Pushing ahead demanded remarkable resilience<\/a> from him.<\/p>\n

Unlike his school years, Louis feels accepted, valued and supported at Le Groupe Maurice. \u201cI\u2019m happy working here because everyone is kind to me,\u201d <\/em>he says simply.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>To us, Louis isn<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>t different at all,<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> says Sylvain Lambert, Sev\u00e4<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s General Manager. The whole staff views him as a dependable, endearing and detail-oriented team member. <\/strong>\u201c<\/strong>He shows up, gives his all,<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> remarks kitchen chef Pierre Charette. <\/strong>\u201c<\/strong>He<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s absolutely part of the family here.<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Outside of work, Louis is a huge fan of the Montreal Canadien. To support his dedication, the residence\u2019s management recently gifted him tickets to see his favourite team play, along with a jersey featuring Cole Caufield\u2019s number.<\/p>\n

His mother was moved to tears by the gesture, overwhelmed with gratitude for the recognition given to her son. \u201cShe never imagined Louis would achieve so much. Just him graduating high school felt like a triumph,\u201d<\/em> recalls Sylvain Lambert.<\/p>\n

His perseverance shines through every day, inspiring his colleagues to strive for better. \u201cHe\u2019s taught me to adjust my approach\u00a0\u2013\u00a0even with other employees,\u201d<\/em> admits the General Manager.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>Just because you<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>re autistic doesn<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>t mean you can<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>t work. You just need a boss who understands we learn differently. And once we master something, it<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s for life!<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong> Louis aptly concludes.<\/p>\n

Having Andr\u00e9, Simon and Louis as part of Le Groupe Maurice is a powerful reminder of how diversity truly enriches our communities. It also highlights how <\/strong>an inclusive environment<\/strong><\/a> gives everyone the opportunity to thrive and be their best. Of course, listening and openness are key to making that possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n
