Recently appointed head of the Margo residence<\/a>, Sophie Denis personifies the people-first values of Le Groupe Maurice. Having worked in the private seniors\u2019 residences sector for 15 years, her greatest ambition is to leverage her experience for the benefit of residents and employees alike. To learn more about Sophie, we sat down for a conversation where she responded openly and honestly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sophie Denis, what made you decide to work with and for older adults?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This has been a long-standing passion of mine. That said, my background didn\u2019t originally steer me toward working in PSRs (Private Seniors\u2019 Residences) \u2013 I first studied education and music. But during university, I worked as a kitchen assistant in a senior living residence over the summer, and that\u2019s where it all began. I discovered a closeness, a respect and a depth of connection that deeply moved me.<\/p>\n

For me, working in a residence is much more than just a job. It\u2019s a vibrant environment where every day is different. You get involved in everything: human connections, of course, but also management, operations… And most importantly, you become an integral part of people\u2019s lives. You\u2019re there with them, in their home, in their daily routine. And this genuine, constant human interaction is what moves me the most. Talking with older adults is a privilege.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How do you characterize your bond with residents?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a relationship deeply rooted in humanity and mutual respect. The opportunity to enhance their well-being and security is an honour I don\u2019t take lightly. No detail is too small\u00a0\u2013\u00a0from daily requests to larger needs, each deserves attention. This role with older adults fills me with gratitude. Our team becomes their touchstone, a reliable constant. They know: we exist for their care, and that awareness matters.<\/p>\n

My bond with older individuals has deep roots. Where I\u2019m from in Gasp\u00e9sie, honouring the elders is fundamental to who we are. I was raised by extraordinarily caring grandparents whose warmth and wisdom shaped me. Working with older adults wasn\u2019t a choice; it was simply coming home!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Which of Le Groupe Maurice\u2019s values resonates with you most?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always dreamed of being part of Le Groupe Maurice family. It\u2019s an environment where human values truly come first. But to answer your question, kindness touches me the most because our society desperately lacks it. Yet it\u2019s essential, especially when working with older people who often face moments of great vulnerability. In my opinion, kindness is a must in a residence.<\/p>\n

Integrity also resonates strongly with me; I remain the same person no matter who I\u2019m speaking with. And collaboration strikes me as equally important. I truly believe that when we move in the same direction with shared purpose, we can achieve remarkable things.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What skills from your past experiences will you bring to Margo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the years, I\u2019ve developed a deep understanding of older people. Being attentive allows me to quickly grasp their needs, often before they voice them. I consider this ability to anticipate as one of my greatest strengths. My past experiences have also made me comfortable overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring proper follow-through. I\u2019ve been through all kinds of situations, and each day brings new learning opportunities. Today, I am able to handle any challenge with steady composure.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What fuels you in this leadership role?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Watching our community flourish. A resident\u2019s casual remark about enjoying meals, appreciating staff or noticing clean spaces; these ordinary moments prove we\u2019re on track. The daily discipline of excellence is exactly the kind of meaningful challenge I love. I also cherish how this role lets me ensure everyone\u00a0\u2013\u00a0residents and staff alike\u00a0\u2013\u00a0feels valued. That\u2019s the beauty of management: it\u2019s alive, it\u2019s boundless, it\u2019s forever unfolding.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sophie, what strengths do people recognize in you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m often described as calm, composed and dependable. What you might call \u201cquiet strength.\u201d Even in emergencies, I keep a cool head. Being present and approachable matters to me; people know I\u2019m someone they can trust. My interpersonal skills are central to who I am. I take time to truly listen. I\u2019m approachable yet thorough, and committed to doing things right. What matters to me is giving the best of myself to the residents and to my team.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What legacy do you hope to create here as General Manager?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A foundation of trust through visible leadership. You\u2019ll find me in dining rooms, not offices\u00a0\u2013\u00a0listening to staff, chatting with residents. True management happens in the common areas. When people see me engaged, I want them to think: \u201cShe\u2019s all in.\u201d<\/p>\n

I also love joining in activities. At our anniversary gala, I visited every single table\u00a0\u2013\u00a0all 300 guests! Many residents said it felt like I\u2019d always been here. That warmed my heart. I even danced the Continental that night. Who knows? Maybe I\u2019ll get to sing for them soon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What message would you like to share with Margo\u2019s residents?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This: I want them to know I\u2019ll devote myself completely to their well-being and security. Every day, I\u2019ll draw on all my experience to make Margo a wonderful place to live. They can count on me!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Before we wrap up, let\u2019s lighten the mood. Sophie, what\u2019s your most-used expression?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s perfect!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013\u00a0though sometimes it\u2019s not perfect at all. (laughs) I also often say \u201cWell, would you look at that!<\/em>\u201d because I\u2019m easily amazed.<\/p>\n

Who\u2019s your dream coffee date? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Sylvester Stallone, hands down. I\u2019ve been fascinated by him since childhood. The messages in his Rocky films are simple yet powerful. They\u2019re all about strength, courage and resilience. I find him quite inspiring.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Where does your soul find calm?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where the St. Lawrence meets the Atlantic. Gasp\u00e9\u2019s shores will always be my heart\u2019s harbour.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite sport?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I absolutely love hiking in the woods. For me, it\u2019s a chance to unplug and recharge. It\u2019s my true passion. I also like swimming. You can solve so many problems underwater! (laughs)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And your favourite cuisine?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m particularly fond of Mediterranean food and seafood. To me, cooking is an act of giving.<\/p>\n

What guides you every day?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gratitude. I\u2019m thankful for what I have\u00a0\u2013\u00a0my family, my partner, my friends, my work… I\u2019ve never taken anything for granted.<\/p>\n
