Coordinated by Interg\u00e9n\u00e9rations Qu\u00e9bec and held every third week of May, the <\/strong>Semaine qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnelle<\/strong><\/a> highlights the importance of building bridges across generations\u00a0\u2013\u00a0through concrete initiatives focused on sharing experiences, passing on knowledge and bringing different age groups together. Here\u2019s a look at some of the ways this has come to life at Le Groupe Maurice!<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why these encounters change everything<\/h2>\n

Did you know that, according to Johanne Filiatrault, a researcher at the Centre de recherche de l\u2019Institut universitaire de g\u00e9riatrie de Montr\u00e9al (CRIUGM) and author of an opinion piece in La Presse<\/em><\/a>, intergenerational initiatives bring significant benefits for both older adults and young people alike?<\/p>\n

For example, they can contribute to psychological well-being, self-esteem, a sense of purpose, the development of social skills and even learning. They also play an important role in maintaining social connection<\/strong> among older adults, fostering encounters that nurture a sense of belonging and the simple joy of being together.<\/p>\n

It is precisely with this in mind that Le Groupe Maurice has seen some wonderful connection-building projects take shape in recent years across its various residences. Through activities that foster a sense of community, these residences have become true gathering places\u00a0\u2013\u00a0where older adults and young people have come together, learned from one another, and grown richer for it, in a dynamic as simple as it is meaningful.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Spreading joy month after month at Cal\u00e9o<\/h3>\n

In early April of this year, no fewer than 70 students from \u00c9cole De La Broquerie in Boucherville visited Cal\u00e9o residence to take part in an Easter bingo and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate in an atmosphere of warmth, camaraderie and gratitude.<\/p>\n

The children taking part in the Cal\u00e9o Project were no strangers to the residence, as they have been visiting every month for three years. The connections built over time run deep, and the kids were eager to see their \u201cold\u201d friends again. Many of the activities along the way have helped forge lasting relationships: word rallies, Easter egg hunts, year-end celebrations\u2026 the warmth and camaraderie were always there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe benefits are felt on both sides. For the young people, it\u2019s a unique opportunity to connect with older adults who have rich life stories to share. These encounters create strong bonds and exchanges that are both inspiring and deeply moving. For the residents, the kid\u2019s visits are always eagerly anticipated. They love welcoming them and building those special connections.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0\u2013\u00a0Carolanne de Chantal, Living Environment Coordinator at Cal\u00e9o<\/em><\/p>\n

This intergenerational approach\u00a0\u2013\u00a0which helps children develop empathy and listening skills\u00a0\u2013\u00a0recently earned \u00c9cole De La Broquerie the Prix Ouverture from the Centre de services scolaire des Patriotes<\/a>. A well-deserved recognition for a project that, month after month, has nurtured kindness and joy in the hearts of everyone involved.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

From written correspondence to personal connection at Bor\u00e9a<\/h3>\n

On April 8, Bor\u00e9a residence welcomed a group of Grade 11 students from \u00c9cole Lucille-Teasdale in Blainville. Over several weeks, these 16 and 17-year-olds had taken part in a mentorship and pen pal program with residents.<\/p>\n

That day, they finally got to meet in person the older adult they had been writing to, and also joined in a virtual quiz. The visit was a perfect reflection of the bond that had grown through their exchanges, bridging the gap between generations one letter at a time.<\/p>\n

To connect with these young adults in the making, some residents dug through old keepsakes to find photos of themselves at 17. One resident, knowing his pen pal wanted to become a firefighter, even asked his son, who works as one, to join the visit.<\/p>\n

The conversations were both stimulating and genuine, and gave older residents a chance to see firsthand just how open-minded and curious these teenagers truly are. The initiative created a rare space where older adults and young people could meet without preconceptions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we see in the news about young people doesn\u2019t reflect reality. We got to see firsthand that the vast majority of them are wonderful, and that the future is in good hands.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Yves Dumais, resident at Bor\u00e9a<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cooking together, sharing more than recipes at Vast<\/h3>\n

In December 2025, four teams\u00a0\u2013\u00a0each made up of four young people who cook together regularly\u00a0\u2013\u00a0took advantage of the holiday season to carry out a culinary project with residents of Vast: a Christmas dinner. The teenagers, who attend \u00c9cole secondaire du Grand-Coteau, were accompanied by a chef instructor.<\/p>\n

Four resident volunteers were happy to roll up their sleeves and get cooking alongside the teens, sharing their know-how along the way. Afterward, they sat down to enjoy the meal together with the students\u2019 families. Prepared with joy and a spirit of sharing, this delicious dinner became a truly moving and unifying moment across generations.<\/p>\n

In the kitchen, passing things on often takes the simplest of forms: a tip that makes preparation easier, a memory that stirs the emotions, a story that lights up a room. In those moments, residents become invaluable keepers and sharers of knowledge. And that is precisely what makes these intergenerational initiatives so meaningful.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dancing in harmony at Les Verri\u00e8res du Golf<\/h3>\n

Last November and December, several head office employees and residents of Les Verri\u00e8res du Golf\u00a0\u2013\u00a0who share the same complex during the day\u00a0\u2013\u00a0came together at lunchtime to try their hand at line dancing. The class was led by Michel Tremblay, HR Director\u00a0–\u00a0Headquarters and Corporate Health and Safety at Le Groupe Maurice, and a passionate country dance enthusiast.<\/p>\n

During these lively sessions, bodies loosened up and laughter filled the room, much to everyone\u2019s delight. The activity was a wonderful way to warm up both muscles and hearts. It speaks to the power of social connection, and to the richness that comes from sharing space across generations in a senior residence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Reading together, growing together at \u00c9kla<\/h3>\n

According to language analyst Marise Guay, \u201c(\u2026)Reading offers many benefits. In addition to reducing stress and keeping the brain healthy, it may be (\u2026) an ally of longevity and happiness.\u201d Did Amand Beaufils and Andr\u00e9 Harvey already know this before becoming volunteers at \u00c9cole primaire Saint-Yves in Quebec City? No matter. Since last February, these two \u00c9kla residents have been helping students learn to read in French.<\/p>\n

Through their caring and attentive presence, they bring the children far more than academic support; they offer their time, their guidance and their encouragement. As meaningful as it is deeply human, this initiative also highlights the important role that senior volunteers<\/a> play in our society.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Intergenerational initiatives rooted in sharing\u2026 and in the heart<\/h3>\n

All of this speaks to the values of the heart and the power of passing something on across generations. These initiatives create real opportunities for connection, mutual recognition and sharing\u00a0\u2013\u00a0while giving both young people and older adults the chance to see each other in a new light.<\/p>\n

In this way, they contribute to a sense of community and help combat ageism<\/a> and social isolation<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0two issues that Le Groupe Maurice takes particularly to heart. Because when generations talk to each other, perceptions shift and prejudices fall away.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While intergenerational initiatives deserve to be celebrated from May 17 to 23, they are best nurtured throughout the entire year<\/em>. In Le Groupe Maurice residences, they serve as a reminder that every encounter between older adults and young people can become an opportunity to learn, to pass something on and to bring people closer together. So, let\u2019s keep that momentum going and cherish this collective richness for all it\u2019s worth!<\/strong><\/p>\n
