Baptiste Duburcq takes the helm as General Manager of ORA

A few weeks ago, Baptiste Duburcq took on the role of general manager at the ORA residence in Ahuntsic. Wanting to learn more about him, we sat down to discuss his journey, his values and his plans with Le Groupe Maurice. Now it’s your chance to get to know him!

Welcome to Le Groupe Maurice, Baptiste! Could you share a bit about yourself and your career journey?

I’m originally from northern France, close to the Belgian border, but I spent much of my life growing up and living in Montreal. During my studies, I quickly realized that hands-on learning suited me best. It was actually at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal that I first discovered my passion for hospitality.

I began as a housekeeping staff member and slowly climbed the ranks. Later, I built my career in luxury hotel brands like Marriott and Hilton, eventually becoming the front desk manager. After seven years in the industry, I felt it was time to apply my experience elsewhere. That’s when I joined the YMCA residences in Montreal, overseeing two housing centres that welcomed a diverse clientele, many of whom were in vulnerable situations.

These varied experiences prepared me to take on the challenge of the general management of ORA, which I approach today with enthusiasm. I fully intend to thrive there and continue developing myself, especially thanks to the certification in corporate finance I’m currently pursuing at HEC Montreal!

What inspired you to join Le Groupe Maurice?

I’d been hoping to join Le Groupe Maurice for quite some time. It all began when my father sent me an article about Luc Maurice. Reading it, I discovered someone who manages to blend business sense with genuine humanity – two qualities I’ve always aspired to bring together in my own career.

On a personal note, I’ve always felt a strong bond with older adults. When I was young in France, I sang in choirs at retirement homes. I felt completely at ease there, like I belonged – and that feeling has stayed with me.

So joining Le Groupe Maurice felt like the natural next step. It’s a way for me to align my path and my values with a company that is profoundly human.

Which of Le Groupe Maurice’s values speaks to you the most?

Definitely kindness. To me, it’s the starting point for everything. Without it, you can’t create a strong community, nor can you tackle daily challenges effectively. I try to make kindness the core of my work. I believe that when people feel respected and valued, it becomes much easier to find solutions.

What is your connection with older adults?

I grew up close to both my grandmothers, especially my paternal grandmother. She was probably one of the people I loved and appreciated the most in the world. She was a woman of great wisdom, and was always present and warm.

I was often invited to her home when she hosted bridge games with her friends, and I loved it. I felt good around those women, and my grandmother always had stories to tell. I learned so much from her, you can’t imagine…

Caring for ORA residents today is, for me, a way to pay tribute to her – a way to extend that special bond I’ve always had with older adults, thanks in large part to my grandmother.

How do you see your role at ORA?

One thing I can say right away is that ORA is full of amazing people – both residents and staff. My goal is to support them and help ensure they feel comfortable and cared for. I see myself primarily as a source of support. My role isn’t to impose a rigid vision, but to work closely with the department heads and the whole team to build a vibrant, harmonious living environment that grows and evolves alongside the residents.

I truly want to continue fostering the great energy that already exists, to celebrate what’s working well and to refine whatever challenges arise – always with a spirit of teamwork. The team makes all the difference, trust me!

How will your experiences and skills benefit you in this role?

People often tell me that I am a good listener and empathetic. I find it easy to connect with others, no matter their background or life experiences. I think this is what supports me most in my work today.

Working in hospitality has also taught me to always put the client – and now the resident – at the heart of everything I do. My time at YMCA residences, on the other hand, allowed me to meet people from very different origins, cultures and circumstances, and to interact with them without judgment.

I believe that active listening and an open mind will help me truly understand each resident, their story and their unique needs, so I can contribute to their well-being and ensure they receive the care they are entitled to at ORA.

What message would you like to share with the residents of ORA?

I want them to know that I’m here for them. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I promise to always listen and work together to find solutions.

My aim isn’t to completely transform their daily lives, but to make it a little easier. I recognize that this is their home and I want to help, with the whole team, to make the residence even more welcoming, vibrant and joyful than it already is.

Let’s continue with a series of more personal questions:

What helps you start the day off on the right foot?

Good coffee, some music and my two cats: Méli and Mélo!

Speaking of music, which song always makes you want to dance?

Without a doubt: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. It’s impossible not to move to this song, and it’s definitely the one I like to listen to in the morning to get energized.

What’s your favourite meal or cuisine?

I’d go with a classic steak and fries with pepper sauce… very French (laughs)! That said, I’m also a lover of Quebec cheeses, particularly from the Estrie region.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I enjoy boxing, running and playing video games. I also love fishing, especially during the summer with friends. If I were to recommend one special place, it would be Lake Selby in Estrie – it’s my absolute favourite!

Which person inspires you the most (famous or not)?

I can’t choose just one person, so I’ll go with two: my parents. My mother, for her empathy and emotional intelligence; my father, for his business sense and determination. I don’t hesitate to consult them when I have to make big decisions or feel stuck in a situation. They are my guiding lights in life.

If you could be any animal, which would best describe you?

A wolf. It’s independent and capable of surviving alone, yet it chooses to live in a pack, knowing that together, you can go further.

In another life, what profession would you have wanted to pursue?

Without a doubt, a police officer. I’ve always wanted to protect those who are most vulnerable and make the world a better place, in my own way. That drive to contribute positively to society continues to guide me today, just in a different way.

Thank you for this interview, Baptiste! The ORA team and residents are lucky to have you among them. We wish you all the best in your new role as General Manager, and once again, welcome to Le Groupe Maurice!
