Detective Mark McPherson investigates the killing of Laura, found dead on her apartment floor before the movie starts. McPherson builds a mental picture of the dead girl from the suspects whom he interviews. He is helped by the striking painting of the late lamented Laura hanging on her apartment wall. But who would have wanted to kill a girl with whom every man she met seemed to fall in love? To make matters worse, McPherson finds himself falling under her spell too. Then one night, halfway through his investigations, something seriously bizarre happens to make him re-think the whole case.

Bringing an oratorio to the opera or ballet stage is a daunting task, calling for an assured vision and a deep musical understandingâbut it can be done, as the widely lauded productions of Bachâs Passions by Peter Sellars and Simon Rattle demonstrated not long ago. Verdiâs Messa da Requiem, the most âoperaticâ of masses and perhaps the composerâs crowning achievement, leapt to the stage for the first time in this extraordinary setting out of Zurich, meeting with universal acclaim from audiences and criticsâwith Bachtrack describing it as âa true pioneer, one highly deserving of the thunderous applause and standing ovation it received.âÂ
The soul-stirring spectacle, masterfully choreographed by Christian Spuck, brings together the Philharmonia Zurich under Fabio Luisi, the Zurich Ballet and Opera Chorus, and four jaw-dropping soloists (Krassimira Stoyanova, Veronica Simeoni, Francesco Meli, and Georg Zeppenfeld) who play, sing, and dance new life into Verdiâs masterpiece. Maestro Luisi is, as ever, keenly attuned to the precise dynamic shifts that help imbue Verdiâs masterpiece with its indelible power; and the soloistsâ astonishing voices beautifully meld with those of the choir while the world-class dancers give shape to Spuckâs exquisite choreography.
