Alors que les éditeurs ne paraissent pas emballés par sa proposition, il décide de faire cavalier seul et de produire lui-même son nouveau livre. Il n'a que très peu de temps pour rédiger ce qu'il espère être sa plus grande oeuvre. Pendant qu'il imagine son histoire, ses personnages, dont l'avare Scrooge, se métamorphosent en chair et en os dans son bureau pour l'aider à construire son univers.
