Launched in 2024 with the ambitious goal of building 1,000 affordable apartments in just two years, Mission Unitaînés, a personal philanthropic initiative of our founder, Luc Maurice, will soon reach an impressive milestone: 2,000 apartments for seniors across Quebec! When innovation helps us aim higher
At Le Groupe Maurice, we have always believed that growing older should come with choices – including the opportunity to live in a place that meets your needs, fits your lifestyle and works within your budget. Yet as Quebec’s population ages, access to suitable, affordable housing remains a challenge for many older individuals who struggle to find a place they can truly call home.
This thinking led our founder, Luc Maurice, to launch Mission Unitaînés in 2024 with an ambitious goal from the outset: to build 1,000 attainable apartments for independent seniors across Quebec by 2026. Today, that goal has been surpassed by a wide margin.
With the recent announcement of three new buildings in Sherbrooke, Montreal and Trois-Rivières, Mission Unitaînés will bring the total number of affordable apartments completed or under development across Quebec to 2,000. This important milestone is a testament not only to the success of the model, but also to the scale of the need it addresses.
Mission Unitaînés: A distinct initiative and a shared conviction
Born from Luc Maurice’s personal philanthropic commitment and supported by all three levels of government, Mission Unitaînés aims to quickly provide independent seniors with more modest incomes access to quality, safe and reasonable priced places to live.
While distinct from Le Groupe Maurice, the initiative is rooted in a belief we deeply share: there is no single way to age well. Whatever their aspirations or financial circumstances, older people across Quebec deserve to live in a place that is dignified, vibrant, welcoming and safe.
Growth beyond expectations
When Mission Unitaînés was launched, few could have imagined just how far the project would grow in the years that followed.
The success of the model led to an 11th residence being added to the first phase without exceeding the original budget. A second phase then brought the total to 1,700 apartments across 17 cities. Savings generated through the standardization of the architectural concept and more efficient construction processes ultimately made it possible to add three more buildings, revealing the initiative’s full potential.
In other words, the project didn’t just meet its goals – it surpassed them! The vision behind the model created the conditions to expand its reach and serve even more older adults.
But beyond the numbers, the true measure of this success can be found in the people who benefit from it. In several of the buildings already completed, seniors have moved in and found a place they can truly call home. Their smiles, stories and the connections they build every day offer a tangible reflection of the model’s impact. They remind us that behind every apartment built is a person who can look to the future with greater peace of mind.
How can we rethink housing for older adults?
The story of Mission Unitaînés reminds us of an important reality: as our population ages, we will need innovative and sustainable approaches to meet the challenges ahead.
In many regions of Quebec, the need for affordable seniors’ housing continues to grow. Waiting lists are getting longer, housing costs are rising and more and more people want to stay in their community for as long as possible.
The new projects announced in Sherbrooke, Montreal and Trois-Rivières were selected based on the scale of local needs and the partners’ ability to move quickly to address demand in their communities.
Beyond the buildings themselves, the initiative also promotes a different way of thinking about housing: building more efficiently, working together more closely and expanding the range of solutions to reflect the diverse needs of older adults.
