Qapirangajuq: Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change

This film represents a collaboration between Zacharias Kunuk (Filmmaker - Igloolik Isuma Productions) and Dr. Ian Mauro from University of Victoria, Department of Environmental Studies, as well as many Inuit elders and experts from Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. It’s an important film about climate change, global warming and its impact on Arctic life.  It’s based on observations of physical evidence and testimony from the Inuit population and specifically focuses on elders’ perceptions of changes over the years.  It is a fascinating discussion from a historical perspective.  The film will be followed by 2 discussants - residents of the Liz: Bruce Walker (municipal environmentalist) and Gisùle Cantin. Gisùle worked for decades with Indigenous, national and international organizations (including Parks Canada, UNESCO) on the importance of paying attention to and bringing together Southern scientific and existing Northern indigenous knowledge experts to create positive policies and practices related to various aspects of the circumpolar environment, in particular its climate changes and global warming.  This will be a very stimulating evening.  The film language is Inuktitut with English Subtitles.  Unfortunately, we were unable to find a version with French subtitles  The images are very beautiful and informative.
