In the Heart of the Sea

2015- Adventure- 121m
Dircetor: Ron Howard
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Michelle Fairley, Brendan Gleeson

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down. Based on the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick.

Naples gourmande (FR)

2023 – Documentary – 90 min

Frenetic, noisy, excessive—everything has been said about Naples. One thing is certain: the Parthenopean city does nothing by halves and inspires either unconditional enthusiasm or outright rejection. Naples is an unspoiled and authentic city. This authenticity can be found in the generous and natural character of its cuisine: simple dishes made with quality ingredients from an incredibly rich region.

Between exceptional seafood, sun-ripened fruits and traditional family recipes, chef Anto Cocagne is about to enter a world where food holds a central place.

On the program:

  • The unsung heroes of Neapolitan gastronomy

  • Naples, the city of pizza

  • Volcanism

  • Naples by the sea

  • The island of Ischia

  • Amalfi song

Sri Lanka, Pearl of the Indian Ocean (FR)

2025- Documentary – 90 min

Since the establishment of the republic in 1972, the most accurate literal translation of “Sri Lanka” has been “resplendent island.” Located at the southeastern tip of India and separated from it by the narrow Palk Strait, the island resembles an earring hanging from the Indian subcontinent—a fitting comparison given the wealth of precious stones found in ancient Ceylon.

This island, with its fascinating and rich cultural history, is characterized by its lush vegetation, beautiful coconut-fringed beaches, and abundant mineral and plant resources. Its island location has made it both a refuge for important elements of Indian culture—including early Buddhism and the preservation of the Sinhalese and Tamil languages—and a country open to the outside world.

Because of its strategic location in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka was, for centuries, an essential crossroads between the West and the Far East, making it one of the most culturally diverse countries in Asia.

Sri Lanka is a land of contrasts. Its people are warm, sociable, and welcoming, but the island also has another side: the temptation among certain social groups to withdraw into their own identity. The civil war, which ended in 2009 after twenty-six years of conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamils, clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in early 2018, and the major political and economic crisis in the summer of 2022 all demonstrate that Sri Lanka’s history has been far from a smooth journey.

Shuffleboard

This game is a sport of skill and cooperation. Traces of this game can be found as far back as the 14th century in Europe. The game involves sliding discs with a long-handled stick onto a scoring diagram at the opposite end of the playing surface. Players aim to score points, prevent an opponent from scoring, or both.

It can be played by two individuals in singles or by four players in doubles.

Come and have fun with us.
