Special presentation, The History of Ice Hockey in FR (6)

Jean-Patrice Martel has been interested in ice hockey since childhood and has been passionate about ice hockey research for 25 years. He published the book On the Origin of Hockey in 2014 and four children's books on the history of the sport in the Raconte-moi collection (Canadiens, Montreal Olympics, Alouettes, Maurice Richard). He was president of the Société internationale de recherche sur le ice hockey for four years.

The ice hockey history lecture will cover the origins of the game in Europe and Canada, the first games in Montreal, the first tournament, the history of ice hockey leagues, the Stanley Cup, the creation of the National Hockey League and its evolution, including the expansion phenomenon that has taken the league to 32 teams. We'll talk about the Series of the Century, remembered by everyone who is at least 60 years old (or close to it), which brought interest in international ice hockey to Canada. We'll also talk about ice hockey on radio and TV, and the great stars of the past. We won't forget women's ice hockey, which is almost as old as men's and has a rich history too. And, of course, we won't fail to mention the great successes of the Montreal Canadiens in its history, as well as the five other Montreal teams that also won the Stanley Cup long ago, not forgetting the Quebec team that won it two years in a row over 100 years ago.

The Pianist in FR (6)

In September 1939, Władysław Szpilman, a Polish-Jewish pianist, is playing live on the radio in Warsaw when the station is bombed during Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland. Hoping for a quick victory, Szpilman rejoices with his family at home when he learns that Britain and France have declared war on Germany, but the promised aid does not come. Fighting lasts for just over a month, with both the German and Soviet armies invading Poland at the same time on different fronts. Warsaw becomes part of the Nazi-controlled General Government. Jews are soon prevented from working or owning businesses, and are also made to wear blue Star of David armbands.
