Homer Wells is an orphan, but he does not lack a family. Having grown up at St. Cloud's orphange under the unconventional but loving tutelage of Dr. Wilbur Larch, Homer never wanted for affection. Now, as Homer approaches manhood, he begins to question his future. Homer yearns to explore the world for himself. Upon meeting a privileged young couple, Homer hitches a ride with them and liberates himself from St. Cloud's. Suddenly Homer's choices are limitless. He is introduced to a bigger world full of new sights, adventures and friendships, as well as tragedy, betrayal and danger. The rules that governed his former life seem obsolete. And when Homer falls in love for the first time, his upbringing offers no guidance. As affection turns to ardor, he experiences the highs and lows, as well as the complicated rewards and responsibilities that come with these new emotions. Suddenly, the consequences of making choices become more acute. As the course of his new life unfolds, Homer's seemingly simple past collides with his more complex present. Yet, Homer comes to realize that his previous life has provided him with the means to make profound decisions that will change the course of his future.

Eucher (7)

Game sequence

1. Choosing trump

The card turned up above the stock offers a suit as trump.

Each player can accept or refuse to make this suit trump.

Accept: If a player accepts, this suit becomes trump for the round.

Refuse: If all players refuse, a second phase begins in which players can propose another suit as trump.

2. Trump cards

Trump is the dominant suit for the round. Trump cards override all other suits.

The right Jack is the strongest card.

The “Left Jack” (jack of the same suit as trump) is the second-highest card.

3. Playing tricks

The player to the left of the dealer plays the first card.

Each player, in turn, must follow the suit played if possible.

If a player cannot follow, he may play a trump card or discard another card.

Points

If the trump team wins 3 or more tricks, it scores points.

3 or 4 tricks: 1 point.

5 tricks (perfect round): 2 points.

If the opposing team wins more tricks, they score 2 points (“Euchre”).

Popular variations

Solo game: One player can declare that he will play alone against the other three. If he succeeds, he scores more points.

3-player variation: Each player plays for himself.

End of game

The game ends when a team reaches a predefined score, usually 10 points.

🎬 Groupe Maurice Film Club: Sri Lanka, Pearl of the Indian Ocean in FR (6)

Since the country's transformation into a republic in 1972, the most accurate literal translation of "Sri Lanka" has been "Resplendent Island." Located off the southeastern tip of India and separated by the narrow Palk Strait, the island resembles an earring hanging from the Indian subcontinent. This comparison is particularly fitting given the abundance of precious gemstones found in what was formerly known as Ceylon.

Sri Lanka is an island whose cultural history is as rich as it is fascinating. It is known for its lush vegetation, beautiful coconut-lined beaches, and abundant mineral and natural resources.

Its island geography has made it both a refuge for important elements of Indian culture, including early Buddhism and the preserved Sinhala and Tamil languages, and a country open to the outside world. Thanks to its strategic location in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka served for centuries as an essential crossroads between the West and the Far East, making it one of the most culturally diverse nations in Asia.

Sri Lanka is also a land of contrasts. Its people are known for being sociable and welcoming, yet the island has another side: the tendency of certain groups toward identity-based divisions. The civil war, which ended in 2009 after twenty-six years of conflict between Sinhalese and Tamils, the clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in early 2018, and the major political and economic crisis of 2022 all demonstrate that Sri Lanka's history has not always been a peaceful one.

Foot Health Workshop with Pied Outaouais (6)

Aging Well by Taking Care of Your Feet and Staying Active

As we age, our feet undergo several changes that deserve special attention:

  • Skin: It becomes thinner and drier, making it more prone to cracks and infections. Daily moisturizing and regular inspection are essential.

  • Joints and bones: Each foot contains 26 bones and 33 joints, which naturally wear down over time. Osteoarthritis, fallen arches, and loss of the protective fat pad can increase the risk of pain and falls.

  • Support: Properly fitted footwear and, when needed, custom orthotics can help improve foot support and reduce stress on the joints.

  • Socks: Choose seamless, breathable socks that do not constrict the ankle and are light in colour (to make wounds easier to detect). This is especially important for people living with diabetes.

  • Diabetes: Neuropathy can reduce the ability to feel pain, delaying the detection of injuries. Daily foot inspections and regular podiatric care are strongly recommended.

  • The role of the podiatrist: Early screening, safe treatment of calluses and toenails, prescription of orthotics, and recommendations for appropriate footwear.

Key takeaway: Visiting a podiatrist should be part of a preventive health routine, not just something to consider when pain develops.

This workshop will take place on Wednesday, September 23rd, at 10:00 a.m. in the Cinema and will be followed by an information booth in the reception area afterward.

Card Games ''500'' (8)

The rules of the game: 500 is a game of trump tricks played with 4 players in two teams of 2. The partners sit opposite each other. A 43-card deck is used (a 52-card deck, plus a joker, from which the black 2s, 3s and two 4s are removed).

The order of the cards in trump is as follows:

Joker

Jack of Trump, called Right Bower

Jack of the suit close to the trump suit (example: Clubs if the trump is Spades), called Left Bower

Trumps: Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9.

Other cards: Ace, King, Queen, Jack (if not Left Bower), 10, 9

Without trump, the joker is considered a trump, and wins the trick where it is played, no matter what
